SOLiD & Shared Access Partnership

Solid is proud to announce the Launch of picture-perfect mobile connectivity at the National Gallery.

SOLiD is proud to announce the launch of picture-perfect mobile connectivity at the National Gallery. This project involves the design and installation of a mobile connectivity solution that is being used by all UK mobile providers. SOLiD worked in partnership with Shared Access to provide an in-building solution at this historic site.
The National Gallery is based in Trafalgar Square, Central London and houses over 2,300 paintings running from the mid 13th century to the 1900s. The National Gallery has been housed here since 1838.

As the National Gallery is a Grade I listed building, it presented a number of difficult design challenges. This includes the thickness of the walls in the building which are up to six feet thick in places. In addition, the building covers seven different levels including a basement area. Despite these challenging architectural features, the requirement was for continuous mobile coverage in all of these spaces.

Furthermore, the National Gallery had very limited space in which to house the IT infrastructure required for this type of project. This required an innovative approach that featured the hosting of much of the equipment off site. This was facilitated through the use of a base station hotel connected by dark fibre to the National Gallery.

“An innovative and collaborative approach to improving connectivity”

- Alan Harper, Head of Access Delivery at Virgin Media O2

We worked closely with the National Gallery team to provide ubiquitous coverage throughout the building, utilizing out-of-hours to minimize the impact on the daily operations of the gallery. The project was put to European tender and Shared Access were selected on the basis of their ability to provide a low maintenance but functional solution that could provide connectivity to all areas of the National Gallery.

“It was a pleasure working with Shared Access on this \ prestigious project. Our hardware was supplied to Shared Access and was integrated and commissioned by their own highly-rated RAN engineers. This is also one of the very first cross-London BTS Hotels to go live with SOLiD GENESIS.”

- Steven Galagher, VP Sales EMEA, SOLiD

Shared Access were able to work within the overall project programme to install the onsite equipment that the staff would be utilizing within the building. They were subsequently able to bring on the various UK mobile operators without impact to the staff. The staff were then able to immediately benefit from the addition of new operators as their services came online.

SOLiD in partnership with Shared Access are proud to be able to deliver this mobile connectivity solution for the National Gallery.

“SOLiD have been a great partner to work with – their equipment is perfectly placed and developed for the landlord / commercial office market and their deep experience working with this sector has enabled Shared Access to deliver best in class connectivity solutions to multiple end users”

- Sam Jackman, Chief Development Officer, Shared Access
